Officer Involved Shooting in west El Paso
Updated On: Jun 06, 2016
A 22-year old man was shot by officers who responded to a 9-1-1 call involving an armed suicidal subject who threatened to shoot the responding officers. Information was relayed to the officers that the subject claimed to be armed with an assault rifle and handguns.  Arriving officers approached the residence at the 7100 block of Tierra Taos in west El Paso and were confronted by the subject who was standing on the sidewalk.  The subject was given commands to show his hands at which time the subject pulled out a dark object from behind his back.  The officers ordered the subject to drop the weapon but he advanced towards the officers while illuminating them with the object.  As the subject continued advancing, two officers believing the object to be a handgun, discharged their weapons striking the subject.  Once the scene was secured the officers discovered that the object was a cell phone.  The 22-year old man was transported to University Medical Center where he later died.  Crimes Against Persons and the Texas Rangers are conducting investigations.  The department’s Shooting Review Team is also investigating.  The two officers, a patrol officer and a sergeant assigned to the Westside Regional Command Center have been placed on administrative leave.
