Officer Investigating DWI Crash Gets Hit by Another Intoxicated Driver
Updated On: Dec 09, 2016
Aftermath of Officer Rodriguez's patrol car

Early on Friday morning, December 9, 2016, an El Paso Police officer was hit by a patrol car that was struck from behind by a drunk driver as the officer was conducting a field sobriety test on a driver from a previous collision.  The incident occurred in the 11200 block of Montana Ave. near George Dieter Dr.

The officer, identified as Andres Rodriguez #1541, a 23-year veteran assigned to the DWI Task Force, responded to investigate a crash and during the course of the investigation was conducting a field sobriety test on one of the drivers involved in the first collision.  As the test was being videotaped in front of Officer Rodriguez's patrol car, another drunk driver, subsequently identified as Sherry Lorraine Rodriguez, age 23 (no relation) struck an assisting officer's patrol car. That patrol car then careened towards Officer Rodriguez and the man who was performing the test. Without regard for his own safety, Officer Rodriguez grabbed the man performing the sobriety test and pushed him out of harm's way before being struck by the police vehicle and knocked into the air.  Miraculously, Officer Rodriguez sustained only minor injuries and was released from the hospital later that same morning.  The man performing the sobriety test was uninjured.  Both drivers were subsequently charged with DWI and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
