An El Paso Police Department alert confirmed shots were fired and added that it was a suicidal subject in the parking lot of the Pebble Hills Regional Command Center.
The person died in the parking lot, but no officers were hurt during the incident, police said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said they were told that a man was armed with a gun in the parking lot of the police station.
"A call went up over dispatch of a subject, in the parking log of the Pebble Hill Regional Command Center, that was armed with a handgun," Carrillo said. "It was related to some previous calls that were related to earlier in the day."
When officers approached the "subject" he opened fire, Carrillo said.
The investigation is treating it as an officer-involved shooting, Carrillo said. The Crimes Against Persons unit and Texas Rangers are investigating the scene. Several officers were involved but police did not have details on how many were at the scene or if any fired at the subject.
