Police, funeral community to discuss permanently banning police escorts for processions
Posted On: Jun 158, 2019
The banning of police escorts for funeral processions in El Paso could become permanent.
“Families more often than not expect to have a funeral procession leading them to the church and then to the cemetery someone we don’t have police escort to divide us a safety measure for us it’s a concern,” Dina Perez, director of the El Paso Funeral Director and Embalmers Association, said.
A temporary ban for off-duty police officers was placed after Officer Daniel Rodriguez was struck during a procession in May.
Member of the local funeral service industry and the El Paso Police Department met at the American Legion Post 36 on Thursday evening to how or if anything could be done to change policies to get the suspension lifted.
